Damien Contessa serves as an Associate Teaching Professor in the Sociology Department at The University of Tampa, holding a Ph.D. from the University of South Florida (2016) preceded by an M.A. from Northern Arizona University (2008) and B.A. from SUNY New Paltz (2003).
His research critically examines the intersection of social psychology and environmental sociology through social constructionism and narrative analysis, with particular focus on human-animal boundary transgressions in public spaces. Contessa employs interdisciplinary ethnographic methods integrating sociology, anthropology, and environmental studies, as demonstrated in his dissertation analyzing storytelling when wild animals disrupt socially defined spatial boundaries.
Contessa has published scholarly essays in Humanity and Society and Ecological Anthropology, presenting findings at major conferences including the American Sociological Association, National Communication Association, and Pacific Sociological Association.
His teaching philosophy emphasizes active learning and contemplative pedagogy, applying sociological concepts through personal development and community engagement. Courses taught include Introduction to Sociology, Sociology of Childhood, Social Psychology: A Sociological Approach, Qualitative Research Methods, and Sustainability and Society.

His advisory work at The University of Tampa includes guiding student competition teams and receiving the J. Richard Piper Outstanding Advisor award.
