Dr. Damian Laird serves as Associate Dean Learning and Teaching and Senior Lecturer in Murdoch University's School of Mathematics, Statistics, Chemistry and Physics, driving pedagogical innovation across chemistry, mathematics, and physics curricula.
His academic credentials include:
- Bachelor of Science in Marine Science and Chemistry (1990-1993), University of New South Wales
- BSc (Hons) in Chemical Ecology (1994), University of Tasmania
- Doctor of Philosophy in Chemistry (1999-2003), University of Newcastle Australia
- Graduate Diploma in Education (Tertiary and Adult), Murdoch University
Laird's research pioneers microalgal bioremediation, transforming wastewater pollutants into high-value bioproducts through photosynthetic conversion. His work at the Algal Innovation Hub (Harry Butler Institute) targets sustainable production of pharmaceutical pigments, biodegradable plastics, and carbon-neutral biofuels while reducing industrial CO2 emissions. Teaching specializations include instrumental chemical analysis and first-year chemistry transition pedagogy, recognized through Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.
Professional honors include:
- Senior Fellow, Higher Education Academy (2024)
- Postdoctoral Fellowship, University of Utah Medicinal Chemistry Department (2003-2005)
He supervises 18 research students (8 completed, 10 active) across projects from seaweed cultivation to genetic optimization of microalgal product yields, with industry collaborations spanning Western Australian hydrometallurgy and viticulture sectors. Laird co-leads the Algal Innovation Hub team developing circular economy solutions for industrial wastewater treatment.
