His research critically examines intersections of environmental resource management, state formation, and international relations in the Middle East, with particular focus on transboundary water politics. Current work centers on the Tigris-Euphrates Basin's political ecology through his manuscript The Two Rivers: Water, Development and Politics in the Tigris-Euphrates Basin, 1920-1975, analyzing how water governance shaped national identities in Turkey, Syria, and Iraq. Teaching encompasses global environmental history, Middle Eastern political history, Islamic history, and history of science/technology.
