Dale E. Chapman is a Professor of Music at Bates College, associated with the Africana and American Studies programs. He teaches courses in jazz history, popular music, and African American music, emphasizing cross-disciplinary connections.

Chapman's research explores the cultural and political significance of musical styles, particularly jazz, techno, and hip hop, analyzing how genres produce social meanings through performance. He investigates the intersection of music and political economy, focusing on socioeconomic processes in musical practices. His work has been published in the Journal of the Society for American Music, Popular Music, and the Grove Dictionary of American Music, second edition.
He is currently writing a book titled The Jazz Bubble: Neoclassical Jazz in Neoliberal Culture, which examines the relationship between jazz and neoliberal economic structures.
