Dale Carlson is a Distinguished Practitioner in Residence in IP Law at Quinnipiac University School of Law, where he has been a faculty member since 2014, after serving as an adjunct professor since 2000. He brings extensive practical experience from his career as a retired partner at Wiggin and Dana law firm and as in-house patent counsel at Olin Corporation and Union Carbide Corporation.

Research Interests: Professor Carlson's research primarily focuses on improving the patent system to better serve universities, small entities, and individual inventors. His work examines critical issues in intellectual property law, patent reform legislation, and the intersection of innovation policy with legal frameworks. He is particularly concerned with how patent law changes affect innovation incentives and access to intellectual property rights for smaller players in the innovation ecosystem.
His scholarly contributions include analysis of major patent reform initiatives, with particular attention to the America Invents Act and its potential impacts on innovation. Through his publications in national legal journals and law reviews, he has provided critical perspectives on legislative changes affecting the patent system.
Professional Service: Professor Carlson serves as the historian of the New York Intellectual Property Law Association (NYIPLA), the largest regional IP law association in the country, and previously served as its president. He is actively involved with the Connecticut Intellectual Property Law Association's nominating committee and has contributed to the Gateway Community College Foundation in New Haven, CT.
Courses Taught: At Quinnipiac University School of Law, he teaches LAWS 331 Intellectual Property and LAWS 332 Patent Law courses scheduled for Fall 2025.
