Dag Rune Olsen serves as the rector of UiT The Arctic University of Norway, the northernmost university in the world with campuses across Northern Norway. As rector, he is the chief executive responsible for the academic and administrative leadership of the institution, implementing board decisions and managing resources in accordance with national provisions on financial management.
Professor Olsen's scholarly background lies at the intersection of radiation oncology and medical imaging, with a significant body of research focused on prostate cancer. His scientific work has explored the application of dynamic contrast-enhanced ultrasound (DCE-US) and magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) for monitoring tumor response to radiation therapy. His research contributions have advanced understanding of vascular responses in prostate cancer during combined radiotherapy and androgen-deprivation therapy, with implications for treatment monitoring and optimization.
Throughout his career, Olsen has maintained a dual commitment to scientific research and higher education leadership. His publication record spans both technical scientific journals and influential opinion pieces in Norwegian media. His recent writings (2021-2025) address critical issues including mathematics education, theater's democratic function, healthcare workforce distribution, linguistic reconciliation with Sámi communities, talent development in academia, knowledge transfer policies, and the university's role in the green transition. His leadership perspective consistently emphasizes the vital connection between research and societal development, advocating for increased funding and strategic positioning of universities in national priorities.
Professor Olsen previously served as rector of the University of Bergen, where he was an active participant in national discussions about structural reforms in higher education. In a notable 2019 article, he argued that 'there will be even fewer higher education institutions in Norway in a few years,' citing economic challenges, student competition, research complexity, international collaboration trends, and Norway's relatively high number of institutions per capita as key factors driving future consolidation.
