Dr Daanika Kamal serves as a Lecturer in Law at the Department of Law and Criminology, Royal Holloway, University of London, bringing expertise from prior teaching roles at Queen Mary University of London and London South Bank University. Her academic trajectory centers on socio-legal research at the intersection of gender, law, and justice systems.
Her educational foundation includes:
- PhD in Law from Queen Mary University of London (2020-2023)
- LL.M. from the University of Warwick (2014-2015)
Kamal's research critically examines domestic abuse and violence against women and girls (VAWG) through criminal and family law lenses, with fieldwork analyzing police practices, litigation strategies, and judicial responses. Her feminist legal framework investigates how legal systems construct gendered narratives, as demonstrated in her Oxford University Press monograph on Pakistani domestic violence cases. She actively contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to gender equality through this work.
Her publication portfolio reveals consistent thematic focus on women's legal agency across cultural contexts, from Pakistan's legal constructions of 'bad' and 'mad' women to Iran's weaponization of mental health discourse against hijab dissenters. Recent outputs bridge academic rigor with public engagement, including analyses of judicial symbolism and nationalist narratives in digital media.
Her scholarly recognition includes:
- Reid Research Fund Award (December 2024)
- EC Grant from Law and Society Association (May 2023)
- Principal's Research Studentship, Queen Mary University of London (September 2020)
- Rubina Saigol Research Award (December 2023)
As an Associate Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy, Kamal teaches Criminal Law, Empirical Legal Studies, and Family Law while supervising PhD candidates in gender law specializations. Her research is sustained through competitive grants including the EC Grant and Reid Award, enabling deep investigation into cross-cultural VAWG manifestations. She amplifies impact through editorial leadership at Feminist Legal Studies and public discourse via book talks at SOAS, Birkbeck, and Westminster, alongside media engagements like the New Books Network podcast.
Her institutional presence extends through active participation in research seminars and conference panels, strengthening collaborative networks in gender justice scholarship.
