César Abadía-Barrero is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Connecticut. A medical anthropologist specializing in ethnographic research with children and adolescents, his work focuses on health equity, social responses to disease, and healthcare privatization in Latin America.
- Research areas include HIV/AIDS, Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS), and childhood epidemics
- Current project: Dysregulated Children: Toxicity, Infections, and Immunity in Emerging Childhood Epidemics (with Maria LaRusso)
- Published two books: one on children's experiences with HIV/AIDS in Brazil, and another on Colombia's child/maternity hospital defunding
- Recipient of seed grant from Center for the Study of Culture, Health, and Human Development
His recent publications analyze healthcare access dynamics, including critical examinations of universal health coverage implementation and subaltern health innovations like Kangaroo Mother Care in Colombia. Research trends show consistent focus on marginalized childhood health experiences and systemic healthcare challenges.
