Cythnia C. Minchew Deaton is an Associate Professor of Science Education in the Department of Teaching and Learning at Clemson University’s College of Education. She has been a faculty member since 2008, promoted to her current rank in 2014, and contributes extensively to teacher education, research, and professional development initiatives.
Her educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Science Education, University of Georgia, 2007
- M.Ed. in Science Education, Georgia Southern University, 2001
- B.S. in Biology, Valdosta State University, 1998
Her research focuses on reflective practice, the intentional integration of technology in science teaching, preservice teacher preparation, and professional development for K–12 science educators. She emphasizes inquiry-based learning and mobile technology applications in classrooms.
Dr. Deaton has led multiple professional development and research initiatives, including the iScience Project, LMaST, and Project RES, all aimed at enhancing science and mathematics instruction through technology integration. She teaches courses ranging from elementary science methods to doctoral-level qualitative research.

Dr. Deaton has served as Principal Investigator and Director for multiple externally supported projects, particularly in collaboration with school districts such as Spartanburg School District 7 and Orangeburg School Districts 3 and 5. These efforts focus on reform-based environmental science and technology-enhanced learning. She also co-directed the Clemson Integrated Mathematics and Science Technology Institute and has worked on curriculum development and performance support systems throughout her career.
She is actively involved in research, teacher training, and leadership within her department and continues to mentor future educators and lead innovative educational projects.
