Professor Cyrus Tata is a leading academic in Law and Criminal Justice at the Strathclyde University Law School, where he serves as Director of the Centre for Law, Crime and Justice and Programme Director of the LLM/MSc in Criminal Justice & Penal Change. He is also an academic adviser to the Review of Sentencing Policy in Northern Ireland and Chair of the European Group on Sentencing and Penal Decision-Making, spanning over 25 countries.
His research focuses on sentencing processes, penal policy, plea decision-making, legal aid reforms, and the role of technology in judicial decisions. Notable projects include studies on sentencing discounts, public attitudes toward sentencing, and the integration of remorse in penal systems. He has advised governments globally, including the Republic of Ireland’s judiciary, and contributed to parliamentary inquiries and policy reviews.
Professor Tata holds a Fellowship of the Royal Society of Arts (2017) and leads multiple funded projects, such as exploring sentencing communication dynamics and conducting international comparative research on sentencing practices. His work bridges academia and practice, aiming to reduce prison reliance and enhance justice systems’ fairness and transparency.
