Cyril Reade is an Associate Professor of Art History in the Department of Visual, Media and Performing Arts at Rutgers University-Camden and Director of the Rutgers-Camden Center for the Arts (RCCA). He has been affiliated with Rutgers-Camden since 2011, with prior teaching roles at the Rochester Institute of Technology (Art History), the University of Western Ontario (Sculpture), Concordia University (Montreal), and Université Laval (Québec). His work bridges academia and curatorial practice, emphasizing community engagement and urban cultural dynamics.
- Education: Ph.D. in Art History from the University of Rochester.
His research interests center on public art, urban cultural landscapes, curatorial methodologies, and interdisciplinary studies in art history. He has curated exhibitions at the Stedman Gallery (RCCA) that highlight Camden’s artistic and social fabric, including projects addressing civic issues such as illegal dumping and youth empowerment. His curatorial efforts also include showcasing Camden’s historical and contemporary narratives through diverse media, from traditional portraiture to conceptual mappings of urban life.
Reade’s professional contributions include co-editing Porous Boundaries: Art and Essays in honor of Janet Wolff (2015) and publishing his thesis on Jewish life in Berlin (2007). He has secured significant funding through grants like the 2019 Bloomberg Philanthropies Public Art Challenge grant, which supported civic-focused art installations in Camden. His current projects include a 2024-2025 catalog for Donald Lokuta’s photographs of George Segal’s studio.
Labs/Teams: As RCCA Director and Stedman Gallery curator, he leads initiatives such as A New View–Camden (2021) and Portraits of Camden (2022), fostering collaborations between academic programs, local communities, and artists. He oversees the VMPA Print Lab and the Stedman Gallery’s programming, which prioritizes Camden-focused exhibitions and catalogs.
