Dr. Cynthia Wallace, a 2012 PhD graduate of Loyola University Chicago's English Department, is currently a Professor at an unnamed small Catholic college in Canada operating within a federated system with a large public university. This unique Canadian model provides her with the benefits of a close-knit academic community while granting access to major research resources.
Her research specializes in the works of poet and feminist theorist Adrienne Rich (1929-2012), with primary focus on feminist literature, women's historical continuity, and political dimensions of poetry. She investigates how Rich's writings address societal structures causing cyclical rediscovery of feminist wisdom across generations. In 2022, she edited a special Autumn issue of Arizona Quarterly dedicated to Rich, conceived during the 2020 lockdown as a response to contemporary political relevance of Rich's essays.
Dr. Wallace attributes her scholarly and pedagogical development to Loyola mentors including dissertation director Pamela Caughie, Suzanne Bost, and Micael Clarke. As a first-generation graduate student, she found the department exceptionally supportive, learning to integrate historical context with classroom community-building where students collaboratively unpack texts while understanding each other and the world.
