Cynthia S. Finlayson is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at Brigham Young University, specializing in Near Eastern and Classical Mediterranean archaeology. With over 41 years of fieldwork experience, she is the only woman to have directed major expeditions at two UNESCO World Heritage sites (Petra, Jordan and Palmyra, Syria).
Her research encompasses archaeological site conservation, cultural heritage management, and museum development. Current projects include directing the Ad-Deir Monument and Plateau Project in Petra, Jordan, and consulting for the Bethlehem Museum. She teaches courses in Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Etruscan, and Islamic archaeology.
Recent publications focus on ritual practices at Palmyra, excavations at Apamea's Great Theater, and museum development at Damascus's Azem Palace. Her research integrates cutting-edge technologies including UAV/drone surveys and 3D laser scanning for archaeological documentation.
