Cynthia Ryan

Cynthia Ryan serves as an Associate Professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham with expertise in rhetoric, composition, and medical discourse. Her academic work bridges institutional communication practices with cultural values surrounding health, illness, and scientific understanding.

Professor Ryan's research examines how cultural values shape discourse about health and illness in both academic and public contexts. Her work investigates representations of medical issues in popular media and analyzes how scientific messages are communicated across research journals and public-facing platforms. She approaches discourse analysis through the lens of how institutional and social values influence cultural communication about health, politics, and science.

Her scholarly contributions have appeared in prestigious journals including Rhetoric of Health and Medicine, Journal of Medical Humanities, and JAMA: Journal of the American Medical Association. She has co-edited two significant volumes: City Comp: Identities, Spaces, and Practices (SUNY Press, 2003) and The Rhetoric of Health and Medicine As/Is: Theories and Approaches for the Field (Ohio State University Press, 2020). Beyond academic publications, her commentary regularly appears in mainstream outlets such as the Los Angeles Times and Cancer Today.
