Cynthia R. Phillips is an Associate Professor in the Department of Accountancy at St. John’s University’s Peter J. Tobin College of Business. She also serves as Executive Director of the University’s Center for Teaching and Learning and Office of Online Learning. Her teaching focuses on financial, managerial, cost, and governmental/not-for-profit accounting. Previously, she held roles as Associate Dean for Planning, Accreditation, Finance, and Business Programs, and worked in investment banking as an internal auditor and management accountant.
Dr. Phillips earned an Ed.D. in Instructional Leadership and an MBA in Finance from St. John’s University, a BBA in Accounting from Hofstra University, and a post-doctoral certificate in Accounting/Finance from the University of Florida’s Warrington School of Business.
Her research interests include ESG, corporate board diversity, educational governance, and active learning pedagogy. She explores topics such as sustainability reporting, audit practices, governance structures in educational institutions, and the impact of technology in accounting education.
Her publications span corporate governance, ESG initiatives, audit practices in school districts, and pedagogical trends like the flipped classroom. She has presented widely at academic conferences and contributed to policy discussions on fiscal management in public and non-profit sectors.
Dr. Phillips holds CPA certification in New York State and is actively involved in faculty development and online learning innovation, particularly during the challenges of the pandemic.
