Dr. Cynthia Okpokiri is a Lecturer in Social Work at the University of East Anglia (UEA), affiliated with the School of Social Work and the Centre for Research on Children and Families. She holds a PhD from the University of Sussex (2017) on first-generation Nigerian immigrant parents and child welfare in Britain. Her research focuses on child safeguarding, Black parenting (developing the 'requisite parenting' framework), migration, and social justice. She advises three doctoral students and contributes to national and international policy through roles like External Examiner at the University of Bristol and membership in the Council of Deans of Health EDI Strategic Policy Group.
Her research interests include child protection, parenting methodologies, migration impacts, and Ubuntu philosophy. She has collaborated across Europe, Australia, and Africa, addressing social work practices in Global South contexts. She won the 2021 Kay McDougall British Journal of Social Work Award and frequently engages media and conferences on child welfare and cultural intersections.
