Dr. Cynthia Chapman is a Professor of Religion at Oberlin College, affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences. She holds a BA from Kalamazoo College (1987), MDiv from Vanderbilt Divinity School (1991), and ThD from Harvard Divinity School (2002). Her research focuses on biblical studies, gender roles, and kinship systems in ancient Near Eastern contexts, with notable work on maternal lineage and social identity formation.
Chapman’s publications include The House of the Mother (2016) and articles in Journal of Biblical Literature. She recently received a NEH Summer Stipend (2024) for her project Mother-born Nations, exploring matrilineal principles in biblical texts. She has been honored with Oberlin’s Excellence in Teaching Award (2018-2019).
In 2025, she teaches courses like The Book of Job and Hebrew Bible in its Ancient Context. Her work bridges archaeological studies, Jewish traditions, and feminist interpretations of religious texts. She contributes to Oberlin’s Jewish Studies program, which recently expanded its curriculum and faculty.
