Cynthia Caron is an Associate Professor in Sustainability and Social Justice at Clark University, with affiliations to the Center for Gender, Race, and Area Studies (CGRAS) and the George Perkins Marsh Institute. Her work bridges development sociology and humanitarian practice, focusing on gender relations in agriculture, land governance, displacement, and adolescent girls' empowerment. She holds a Ph.D. in Development Sociology from Cornell University (2003), an M.F.S. from Yale University (1993), and a B.A. from Clark University (1990).
Dr. Caron has over 25 years of field experience in South Asia and Africa, including post-tsunami reconstruction in Sri Lanka, land tenure programming with Landesa, and USAID consulting. Her research employs qualitative methodologies to analyze how gender intersects with resource access, displacement recovery, and climate adaptation. Recent studies explore agricultural livelihoods in Sri Lanka, customary land rights in South Sudan, and banana cultivation gender dynamics in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Her 15 most recent articles span feminist ethics of displacement hosting, climate relocation strategies, and gendered labor in agriculture. She has managed USAID Climate Risk Profile projects and contributed to UNDP/FAO initiatives. Her consulting work includes TetraTech’s CASA task order and Cloudburst’s STARR ERC projects.
