Curtis Deutsch

Curtis Deutsch, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at UMass Chan Medical School. He holds affiliations with the Eunice Kennedy Shriver Center and the T.H. Chan School of Medicine's Departments of Pediatrics and Psychiatry. Dr. Deutsch earned a B.A. in Biology from Georgia Institute of Technology (1973) and a Ph.D. in Behavior Genetics from the University of Texas at Austin (1983). His research focuses on biobehavioral and genetic factors in developmental disabilities, including craniofacial dysmorphology in neurodevelopmental disorders, behavioral phenotyping in intellectual disabilities, and psychiatric genetics linking genetic variations to autism, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder. He has directed programs such as the Craniofacial Research Program and Psychobiology Program at the Shriver Center since 2004 and 2003, respectively. His service roles include NIH review panel membership (2002–2009), leadership in autism advocacy groups, and steering committees in craniofacial genetics and autism research. Dr. Deutsch's work integrates quantitative models of facial morphology with neurodevelopmental studies, contributing to databases for standardized craniofacial measurements.

His publications span over three decades, addressing topics like anticonvulsant teratogenic effects on facial structure and IQ, genomic influences on psychiatric traits, and diagnostic methodologies for neuropsychiatric conditions. Collaborations include work with institutions like Children’s Hospital Boston and Autism Speaks. Dr. Deutsch’s lab at the Shriver Center develops behavioral assessment tools for individuals with developmental disabilities, emphasizing translational research between genetic, neurobiological, and clinical domains.
