Cristina Schultz is the Foley Family Assistant Professor in the Department of Marine and Environmental Sciences at Northeastern University, affiliated with the College of Engineering. Her research focuses on climate change impacts on ocean biogeochemistry, particularly carbon and oxygen cycles, using models and observational data. She employs Earth System models, in situ measurements, robotic instruments, remote sensing, and machine learning to study ocean ecosystems, sediment, and circulation interactions.
Her work emphasizes improving global carbon cycle budgeting and developing climate mitigation strategies. Key research areas include coastal carbon cycles, Southern Ocean dynamics, and subsurface oxygen variability. Notable contributions include the GOBAI-O2 dataset for dissolved oxygen analysis and collaborative studies on benthic fluxes in U.S. coastal regions.
Dr. Schultz’s projects often involve interdisciplinary collaborations and cross-disciplinary grants, such as contributions to the 2025 Tier 1 Award-winning team. Her lab integrates advanced modeling techniques with field observations to address critical environmental challenges, bridging gaps between data integration and real-world applications.
