She approaches these topics through critical theoretical lenses, particularly drawing on the works of Pierre Bourdieu, Paulo Freire, and Axel Honneth to examine power structures, knowledge production, and social justice implications in digital education contexts. Her research often examines the experiences of young people and international students navigating digital environments.
Her recent publications reveal a strong trend toward examining the critical implications of Generative AI in education, digital citizenship for young people, and decolonial approaches to digital education. She has produced a three-book collection focused on young people's digital experiences (Digital Privacy and Safety, Social Media, and Digital Footprint), demonstrating her commitment to translating research into practical educational resources. Her work consistently emphasizes social justice, critical engagement with technology, and the importance of co-production with young people in developing digital literacy knowledge.
Dr. Costa actively supervises PhD students in topics related to the interplay between digital society and critical education, curriculum, and digital inequalities. She teaches undergraduate modules including Digital Literacies in Action and Digital Society and Education, as well as postgraduate courses in Educational Technologies and Narrative Inquiries. Her teaching reflects her research interests, emphasizing critical engagement with digital technologies and their societal implications.
