Cristiano Mota is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Science and Technology, NOVA University Lisbon, since 2025. He serves as a senior researcher in the Structural and Molecular Biology Research Group and leads the XTAL - Macromolecular Crystallography laboratory.
His primary research focuses on structural biology of metalloenzymes, particularly molybdenum and tungsten-containing systems like formate dehydrogenase and aldehyde oxidases. He employs X-ray crystallography and time-resolved structural approaches to dissect catalytic mechanisms and dynamic conformational changes during enzyme function.
Analysis of his 2020-2024 publications reveals consistent investigation into tungsten-dependent formate dehydrogenases and human aldehyde oxidase, utilizing integrated spectroscopic (EPR, NMR) and crystallographic methods to probe metal coordination stability, oxidative inactivation pathways, and enzyme inhibition mechanisms.
Dr. Mota directs the XTAL laboratory specializing in macromolecular crystallography and remains actively engaged in the Structural and Molecular Biology Research Group at NOVA University Lisbon.
