Professor Cristian Bonato leads the Spin-based Quantum Technology research theme at Heriot-Watt University's School of Engineering & Physical Sciences, where he also directs the Nanoscale Quantum Sensing facility. He holds a prestigious EPSRC Early-Career Fellowship (2019-2024) and develops quantum technologies using semiconductor spins for secure communication and nanoscale sensing applications.
Education includes:
- MSc in Physics (2004) - University of Padova
- PhD in Electrical Engineering (2008) - University of Padova
His research integrates quantum spintronics with photonics and machine learning across three themes:
- Quantum devices in silicon carbide for communication networks
- Nanoscale quantum sensors for magnetic resonance imaging
- Machine learning algorithms for quantum system characterization
Awards:

He leads Heriot-Watt's Quantum Photonics Laboratory spin technology group and manages the university's Nanoscale Quantum Sensing infrastructure.
