Professor Craig Whitehead serves as Professor at Flinders University's College of Medicine and Public Health and Regional Clinical Director of Rehabilitation, Aged and Palliative Care in the Southern Adelaide Local Health Network since 2009. His clinical leadership encompasses aged care, rehabilitation, stroke medicine, and palliative services across Royal Adelaide Hospital and regional implementation of South Australia's health care plans.
His educational qualifications include Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (BM, BS) and Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP).
Research focuses on developing and evaluating innovative care models for vulnerable older adults through translational health services research. Key initiatives include leading SA Ambulance's urgent in-home geriatric care pathway to reduce hospital pressure, establishing quality improvement collaboratives for dementia care, and reducing hospital readmissions through cross-sectoral partnerships. His work bridges clinical practice, policy development, and biological research on aging.
Recent publications demonstrate concentrated expertise in aged care transitions, emergency department utilization by older populations, and biological mechanisms of cognitive decline. The research portfolio shows strong emphasis on implementation science with real-world health system impact, particularly in residential aged care settings and dementia management.
Professor Whitehead secured Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) grants as Chief Investigator to evaluate and scale geriatric care models. He contributed significantly to the Registry of Senior Australians (ROSA) that informed the Royal Commission into Aged Care, and currently serves as Associate Investigator on the iSupport dementia caregiver program. His collaborative approach engages primary care, hospitals, aged care facilities, and consumers across multiple translational projects.
He leads the ROSA research group and coordinates multidisciplinary teams including clinicians, researchers, and policymakers. Current initiatives involve establishing community-of-practice networks for dementia care improvement and implementing evidence-based guidelines through quality improvement collaboratives across South Australia.
