Professor Emeritus Craig Smith specialized in political communication during his tenure in the Department of Communication at North Carolina State University. His research examined three core areas: communication strategies in election campaigns, presidential rhetoric as a leadership tool, and persuasion mechanisms in social movements. He authored foundational texts including Presidential Campaign Communication and The White House Speaks, analyzing how leaders use communication to influence public opinion.
With a career spanning 28 years in the UNC system, Professor Smith chaired communication departments at Wayne State University and NC State. He held leadership roles in professional associations including presidency of the Southern States Communication Association and editorship of the Southern Communication Journal. His scholarly work established frameworks for analyzing political discourse and campaign strategies.
