Craig Owen is a Senior Lecturer in Psychology at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), Cambridge. He holds a PhD from the University of Bath and MSc/BSc degrees from Loughborough University. His research focuses on critical social psychology, critical health psychology, gender studies, and qualitative methods, with a particular interest in masculinity, media representation, and embodied practices. He supervises PhD students exploring gender performance through qualitative research.
Research Interests: Craig’s work interrogates performances of gender in self-help texts, media, and advertising, with notable projects on capoeira, billboard representations of plus-size models, and masculinity in TV series like Cobra Kai. He critiques lad culture, men’s health discourses, and parenting manuals for raising feminist sons. His research often intersects with queer theory, poststructuralism, and media analysis.
Teaching: He teaches courses on Sex, Gender and Sexuality, Self and Society, and Essential Research Methods. He emphasizes inclusive pedagogy and critical engagement with social norms.
Awards & Memberships: Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), editorial board member of The Journal of Men’s Studies, and member of ARU’s Centre for Societies and Groups.
