Craig Nies is an Associate Professor of Piano at the Blair School of Music, Vanderbilt University, where he has served since 1991, including 14 years as co-chair of the Piano Department. Previously, he was an adjunct Assistant Professor at the Yale School of Music (1985–1991) and teaches/performances annually at the Brevard Music Center since 2006.
His performances encompass extensive classical repertoire, including complete works by Bach (e.g., Well Tempered Clavier, Goldberg Variations), Beethoven (Diabelli Variations, Hammerklavier Sonata), Mozart, Schubert, and Rachmaninoff. He has premiered works by composers like Richard Danielpour and Michael Alec Rose, and collaborated with renowned ensembles such as the Blair String Quartet and New York Woodwind Quintet.
Education includes B.M. from Curtis Institute of Music, M.M. and M.M.A. from Yale School of Music, and D.Mus. from Stony Brook University. His pedagogical lineage includes studies under Mieczyslaw Horszowski, Rudolf Serkin, and other eminent pianists.
Media engagements include NPR broadcasts of Debussy’s solo works, live-streamed performances at Brevard, and international radio/TV appearances in Russia, England, and Germany. Notable concerti include Mozart No. 25, Shostakovich No. 1, Rachmaninoff No. 3, and Brahms No. 2.
