Dr Craig Murray is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Health Research at Lancaster University’s Faculty of Health and Medicine. As a health psychologist and qualitative methods specialist, his work focuses on identity, stigma, and embodiment in chronic physical health conditions, physical disability, and visible differences. His research particularly emphasizes psychological and social aspects of amputation, prosthetic use, and rehabilitation. He has conducted studies on sport participation after limb loss, psychological support experiences post-amputation, and the impact of the pandemic on individuals with Parkinson’s and their caregivers.
His professional roles include editorial board membership for Health Psychology Review and Qualitative Methods in Psychology Bulletin, as well as external examining duties at institutions like the University of Southampton and Nottingham Trent University. He has contributed to projects funded by the Bial Foundation and National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), exploring topics such as well-being in Parkinson’s patients during the pandemic and anomalous experiences at life’s end.
Dr Murray’s research also addresses broader themes in healthcare, including midwifery perspectives on perinatal psychosis, parental experiences of congenital heart disease diagnosis, and the psychological effects of military amputation rehabilitation. His interdisciplinary approach integrates qualitative methodologies with clinical practice to improve patient-centered care and address stigma in healthcare contexts.
