Craig M. Stephens is the Sanfilippo Family Professor of Biology & Public Health at Santa Clara University's College of Arts and Sciences. He holds a B.S. in Biology from Roanoke College, a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the University of Virginia, and completed postdoctoral research at Stanford University.
- Research Focus: Genomic analysis of antibiotic resistance evolution in human-associated bacteria, particularly Escherichia coli
- Key Contributions: Studies on sucrose utilization pathways, genome sequencing of bacterial symbionts, WGS-based diagnostic methodologies, and comparative genomic analysis of pathogenic strains
- Academic Leadership: Principal Investigator for NIH and NSF grants focused on microbial genomics
His 15 most recent publications (2025-2015) reveal consistent research themes in antibiotic resistance mechanisms, genomic epidemiology, pathogen evolution, and diagnostic genomics. This work has important implications for public health and infectious disease management.
