Craig Johnston

Dr Craig Johnston is a Senior Lecturer in Criminology at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol). His research focuses on youth justice, alternative provision, school exclusion, class, masculinities, disability studies, and social justice. He holds qualifications including a Ph.D., SFHEA, ME.d, MA, PGCE, and BA (Hons). Johnston has over 30 years of experience across Youth Justice, Psychology, Education, Social Work, and Health in the UK and USA.

His funded research includes projects on young people and alternative provision (NIHR), Olympic legacy participation (Coca-Cola/Streegames), and pedagogical innovation (Class in the Classroom). Professional activities include editorial roles for the Journal of Class and Culture, co-founding the Alliance of Working Class Academics, and directing Children in Scotland. He has convened major conferences on topics like social justice in education and class dynamics.

Johnston supervises doctoral students researching therapy among Black male gang members, police race action plans, and adolescent therapy. His work bridges policy, practice, and theory, emphasizing intersectional approaches to marginalized youth and working-class communities.
