Dr. Craig Furneaux is an Associate Professor in the School of Accountancy at Queensland University of Technology (QUT), leading the Australian Centre for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Studies. His expertise spans accountability, capacity-building, and organizational change in nonprofits, social enterprises, and faith-based charities. He has a Ph.D. from QUT, alongside qualifications in Sociology and Education. He has held editorial roles, including Associate Editor for the Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly (2019), and delivered keynote addresses on philanthropy and accountability.
His research focuses on nonprofit governance, beneficiary participation, and the intersection of philanthropy with civil society. Recent work examines digital transformation in nonprofit accountability during the pandemic and credit unions' regulatory dynamics. He has advised government bodies like the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet on social procurement strategies.
Furneaux teaches courses on nonprofit leadership and ethics, including BSN550 Responsible Enterprise Leadership. He has supervised over 10 doctoral and master's students on topics such as beneficiary evaluation, philanthropic accountability, and social enterprise governance. His awards include a 2010 poster competition win and a 2020 Vice-Chancellor’s Excellence Award nomination.
Key contributions include pioneering frameworks for social procurement, analyzing public trust in charities, and exploring the role of place in foundation partnerships. His research outputs span over 80 peer-reviewed articles, books, and industry reports, emphasizing practical solutions for nonprofit sustainability and accountability.
