Craig Cahillane is an Assistant Professor in the Physics Department at Syracuse University. He specializes in gravitational wave detector technology and next-generation observatory design. His work focuses on improving interferometric measurement systems and developing Cosmic Explorer, a future gravitational wave observatory.
Education:
- Bachelor's in Physics and Computer Science from University of Notre Dame (2014)
- Ph.D. in Experimental Astrophysics from Caltech (2021)
Research Interests: Interferometric calibration, detector noise modeling, precision parameter inference, and next-generation gravitational wave infrastructure.
Grants:
- "Advanced Interferometer Control in the Presence of Radiation Pressure" (NSF, 2024-2027)
- "Cosmic Explorer Optical Design" (NSF, 2023-2026)
Teaching: AST 101, PHY 399, PHY 690 (Independent Study).
Labs/Teams: Collaborations include LIGO Hanford Observatory and Cosmic Explorer design initiatives. Co-developed the "LED Spacetime" interactive display at Syracuse Physics.
