Dr. Craig Alan Smith is a Professor of History and Political Science at Pennsylvania Western University (California Campus). He specializes in legal history, particularly the U.S. Supreme Court's impact on societal changes. His research includes judicial biographies and constitutional law evolution. He has authored multiple articles and books, including Failing Justice: Charles Evans Whittaker on the Supreme Court, which won a major historical award.
Leadership roles include Chairperson of the Faculty Professional Development Committee (2010-13), Faculty Senate President (2011-15), and multiple APSCUF union leadership positions (2014-22). He received Presidential Distinguished Merit Awards for Research (2019) and Service (2014). Current projects include a biography of Justice Tom C. Clark.
Teaching focuses on U.S. History, historical methods, and American politics. His work bridges legal scholarship with public history through accessible biographies and institutional critique.
