Craig A. Spencer is an Associate Professor of the Practice of Health Services, Policy, and Practice at Brown University School of Public Health. He combines clinical expertise in emergency medicine with academic leadership in global health, humanitarian response, and pandemic preparedness. His work bridges field epidemiology in crisis zones with academic research on historical determinants of public health.
Education: MD from Wayne State University (2008), MPH from Columbia University (2013), and BA from Wayne State University (2003). Affiliations include the Brown University Pandemic Center, Watson Institute’s Center for Human Rights and Humanitarian Studies, and the Council on Foreign Relations (Life Member since 2024).
Research focuses on global health equity, pandemic preparedness, and humanitarian crises. Key projects include maternal health in Burundi, child separation in Congo/South Sudan, hepatitis E surveillance in Chad, and MSF’s Ebola response in Guinea. He emphasizes historical analysis of public health systems and their intersection with technology and policy.
Publications span high-impact journals like the New England Journal of Medicine and New York Times, focusing on pandemic policy, global health disparities, and clinical insights from his frontline experiences. Awards include the Emmy Award (2021) for pandemic-related media work and recognition for contributions during the COVID-19 crisis.
