Dr. Courtney J. Campbell serves as Associate Professor in Latin American History in the Department of History at the University of Birmingham, where they also hold the position of Joint Director of the University of Birmingham Brazil Institute. Campbell's academic journey spans multiple continents, with educational credentials including a PhD and MA in History from Vanderbilt University, an ME in Theory and History of Education from Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, and dual BAs in Spanish and French from the University of Michigan-Flint.
Originally from southeast Michigan, Campbell's career path includes Peace Corps service in Paraguay (2001-2003), teaching in Brazil (2003-2008), doctoral studies in Nashville (2008-2014), followed by postdoctoral positions at the Institute of Historical Research in London (2014-2015) and Tougaloo College in Mississippi (2015-2016). They joined the University of Birmingham faculty in Autumn 2016 and have established a robust research program focusing on Latin America, particularly Brazil.
Dr. Campbell's scholarly work centers on regional identity, race and representation, gender studies, and transnational cultural movements. Their research examines how regional identities are constructed and represented in national and global contexts, with particular attention to the Brazilian Northeast. Campbell's teaching portfolio includes undergraduate courses on The History of Africa and its Diaspora, Latin American History through Film, and Rebellious Women and the Latin American Nation, as well as postgraduate courses on Global Histories and Historical Methods.
Notable publications include the 2022 monograph Region Out of Place: The Brazilian Northeast and the World (1924-1968), which explores how Brazilians discussed belonging to the northeastern region in the early- to mid-twentieth century. Campbell is currently developing two book projects: Rebellious Women and the Brazilian Nation and Raising Anita: Mothering, Other-Mothering, and Anti-fascism in Twentieth-Century Germany, Mexico, Brazil, and Beyond, alongside co-editing Brazilian Regionalism in a Global Context.
Dr. Campbell has received significant recognition through competitive fellowships including the Past and Present Postdoctoral Fellowship and Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship. With funding from the British Library's Endangered Archives Programme, they have directed two major projects digitizing historical documents in Paraíba, Brazil. Their scholarly contributions have been featured in BBC Brasil, The New Books Network, The Conversation, and History Today, demonstrating substantial public impact of their research on Brazilian history and culture.
