James Campbell is the Edgar E. Robinson Professor in United States History at Stanford University. He holds a Ph.D. in History from Stanford University (1989), an M.A. in History from Stanford (1983), and a B.A. in History from Yale University (1980). His research focuses on African American history and the broader history of the black Atlantic, examining interconnections between Africa and America from the transatlantic slave trade to contemporary times.
Campbell's recent work explores public history, investigating how societies represent their pasts through museums, memorials, films, and political movements. His publications include studies on historical photography of civil rights struggles and examinations of slavery's institutional legacies.
