Courtney G. Joslin is the Martin Luther King Jr. Professor of Law at the UC Davis School of Law. She specializes in Constitutional Law, Employment Discrimination, Family Law, and issues at the intersection of Sexuality, Gender, and the Law. Her work focuses on family recognition, particularly for same-sex and unmarried couples, and legal frameworks for modern family structures.
She holds a J.D. magna cum laude from Harvard Law School (1998) and a B.A. magna cum laude from Brown University (1994). Joslin has been honored with prestigious awards, including the Dukeminier Award (2010, 2019), the AALS New Voices in Gender Studies Paper Competition (2011), the UC Davis Distinguished Scholarly Public Service Award (2024), and the 2023 Distinguished Teaching Award.
Her research explores legal barriers to family equality, parenthood rights, and modernizing family law. She co-authored influential textbooks, including Sexuality, Gender, and the Law and Modern Family Law, and contributed to the Uniform Parentage Act (2017) as its Reporter. Joslin is an elected member of the American Law Institute and has held visiting roles at UC Berkeley Law.
Her recent publications address multiparent families, legal recognition of non-traditional relationships, and the intersection of LGBTQ+ rights with family law. She regularly engages in public commentary, advocating for equitable legal frameworks for diverse family structures.
