Courtney Bryan is the Albert and Linda Mintz Professor of Music at Tulane University’s Newcomb College, specializing in Black American Music (BAM). A composer-pianist, her work bridges jazz, experimental music, and sacred traditions.
She holds a DMA from Columbia University, an MM from Rutgers University, and a BM from Oberlin Conservatory. She completed postdoctoral studies in African American Studies at Princeton University.
Research/Creative Focus: Bryan explores emotional expression through sound, notation of improvisation, and intersections of spirituality/social justice. Her compositions include orchestral works, operas, and interdisciplinary collaborations with visual artists and writers.
Performance Venues: Her work has been presented at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and international festivals. Collaborators include the London Sinfonietta and International Contemporary Ensemble.
Honors: Major awards include the Herb Alpert Award (2018), Rome Prize (2019), United States Artists Fellowship (2020), and MacArthur Fellowship (2023).
Educational Outreach: She designs programs for young composers at institutions like Carnegie Hall and the Jacksonville Symphony.
