Corinne Peek-Asa is the Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation (VCRI) at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), and a Distinguished Professor in the Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science. She leads UCSD’s $1.76 billion research portfolio, fostering innovation in climate, national security, health, and equity-focused entrepreneurship. Her academic background includes a Ph.D. in Epidemiology from UCLA and a Master’s in Public Health from UCLA, alongside a Bachelor’s in Biochemistry from the University of New Mexico.
Dr. Peek-Asa’s research focuses on injury and violence prevention, with leadership roles in the National Academy of Medicine, the Society for the Advancement of Violence and Injury Research (SAVIR), and NIH-funded international trauma training programs. She co-chairs the National Academies’ forum on Traumatic Brain Injury and directs a program building global trauma research capacity in 11 institutions. Her work has influenced national policies on healthcare violence and workplace safety.
Her grants include funding from the Office of Naval Research and the State of California to expand UCSD’s research-to-innovation pipeline. Awards include the ResearchAmerica! Public Health Hero distinction and election to the National Academy of Medicine in 2020. She advises on equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) initiatives and collaborates with industry and governmental partners to advance interdisciplinary research.
