Constance A. Schall is a Professor and serves as the Interim Vice President for Research at the University of Toledo within the Department of Chemical Engineering. Her educational background includes a Ph.D. and M.S. in Chemical Engineering from Rutgers University, and a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Cornell University.
Research Focus
Dr. Schall's research centers on advanced separation technologies with two primary thrusts:
- Bioseparations: Developing protein crystallization techniques for structural analysis and industrial purification, including NASA-funded microgravity crystal growth on the International Space Station to enable neutron diffraction studies of enzyme mechanisms.
- Biofuels Innovation: Pioneering ionic liquid pretreatments for lignocellulose to disrupt cellulose crystallinity, enabling efficient enzymatic hydrolysis into fermentable sugars at low enzyme loadings.
