Conrad Plaut is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where he previously served as Department Head (2012-2022). His research focuses on topology at scale, metric geometry, and applications of discrete homotopy theory to algebraic topology. He has held roles including Undergraduate Associate Head and Director of UTK Math Honors. Plaut's work bridges pure mathematics with applied contexts, such as fractal geometry and data analysis through persistent homology. He has secured over $1.5M in NSF grants.
Education: PhD in Mathematics from the University of Maryland.
Research interests include differential geometry, Riemannian geometry, Alexandrov spaces, fractal geometry, topological groups, and generalized covering spaces. Recent work explores resistance metrics on fractals and spectral proxies in spaces lacking traditional length structures. His publications (1989–2021) emphasize geometric topology, metric spaces, and homotopy theory.
Teaching spans 25 courses across levels, including calculus, topology, and abstract mathematics. No explicit awards listed, but sustained academic leadership and funding indicate recognition in the field.
