Conrad Hirano is a CCHS Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow in the Department of History at Northwestern University. His research focuses on the environmental history of modern Japan, particularly air pollution, energy consumption, and anti-smoke regulations from the 1880s to 1990s.
Education:
- BA in Liberal Arts, Soka University of America
- MA in History, Montana State University
- PhD in History, Northwestern University
Research Interests: Exploring the intersections between energy production/consumption and environmental policy in Japan. Investigates how new energy sources (e.g., coal, electricity, nuclear power) create unintended environmental consequences and social inequities. Current work examines anti-smoke campaigns and regulatory frameworks.
Teaching: In Spring 2024, he will teach 'Energy and Environments: A Global History,' analyzing energy transitions and their environmental impacts across human societies. The course questions who benefits/loses when energy systems shift.
Community Engagement: Participates in CCHS events and scholarly discussions with the university's academic community.
