Dr. Colter Chitwood is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Natural Resource Ecology & Management at Oklahoma State University (OSU). His research focuses on population ecology, predator-prey dynamics of big game species, and wildlife habitat management in forested systems. He teaches Wildlife Management Applications and Planning and Wildlife Management for Game Species. Dr. Chitwood is actively involved in The Wildlife Society (TWS), serving as the Faculty Advisor for OSU's student chapter. His academic background includes a Ph.D. and M.S. from North Carolina State University and a B.S. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Education:
- Ph.D., Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology – North Carolina State University (2010–2014)
- M.S., Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences – North Carolina State University (2007–2010)
- B.S., Environmental Sciences – University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2001–2005)
Research Interests:
- Population ecology of big game and forest wildlife
- Predator-prey interactions and habitat management strategies
- Wildlife conservation in forested ecosystems
His recent articles emphasize camera trap methodologies, wildlife population dynamics, and restoration ecology. Notable projects include studies on elk acclimation in Missouri, invasive species impacts, and large-scale camera surveys like SNAPSHOT USA. He advises numerous graduate and undergraduate students, focusing on applied wildlife ecology and conservation. Dr. Chitwood’s lab collaborates with agencies like the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, emphasizing field-based research using radiotags and camera traps.
