Colleen Whyte, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Recreation & Leisure Studies at Brock University. Her research focuses on aging, leisure, and quality of life for older adults, particularly within long-term care (LTC) settings. She advocates for person-centered practices in therapeutic recreation and promotes intergenerational engagement. Dr. Whyte is a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (C.T.R.S.) with prior experience in healthcare sectors including geriatric and mental health services.
Her research interests include leisure's role in well-being, intergenerational programs, and combating ageism. She has held the Chancellor’s Chair for Teaching Excellence (2021–2024) and led an SSHRC-funded study on dementia and friendship. Dr. Whyte teaches courses such as Advanced Methods in Therapeutic Recreation and supervises graduate students in aging and leisure studies.
Her work emphasizes cultural shifts in aging perceptions and practical interventions in LTC environments. Recent publications address mobility aids in care homes, art therapy for dementia patients, and narrative inquiry into healthcare professionals' well-being.
