Colin Nolden

Dr. Colin Nolden is a Senior Research Fellow at the Energy Institute within the Sheffield University Management School (University of Sheffield), joining in March 2024. Previously, he held roles at the University of Bristol Law School (2017–2024) and the University of Oxford’s Environmental Change Institute and School of Engineering Science. His research focuses on energy policy, climate governance, demand-supply asymmetry, and place-based sustainability transitions. He has been funded by UK agencies like the Economic and Social Research Council, Innovate UK, and the Royal Academy of Engineering.

Educational background includes a PhD in Energy Policy from the University of Exeter (UK). He has held academic posts at the Centre on Innovation and Energy Demand (Sussex), Provadis University (Germany), and the University of Exeter. Beyond academia, he worked as an energy efficiency consultant, steelworker, and mussel farmer. He currently serves as a non-executive director for Community Energy South, overseeing research and innovation.

Research interests emphasize equitable net-zero transitions, local governance frameworks, and policy asymmetry between energy supply and demand. Key projects include analyzing decentralized energy markets, community energy models, and climate policy instruments like carbon pricing and climate clubs. His work bridges technical, socio-economic, and institutional dimensions of energy systems.

Grants and collaborations span UK government departments (BEIS, DESNZ), international partnerships, and industry. Notable contributions include frameworks for energy service contracts and critiques of policy neglect toward demand-side interventions.
