Professor Colin Lawson is a distinguished academic and performer at the Royal College of Music (RCM), serving as Historical Clarinet Professor, Chair of Historical Performance, and Doctoral Supervisor. From 2005 to 2024, he was the RCM’s Director and became a Vice President in 2024. His roles include overseeing the College’s strategic direction and fostering academic excellence in historical performance.
Lawson holds degrees including a PhD and DMus, and is a Fellow of multiple institutions (FRCM, FRNCM, etc.). His research focuses on historical performance practice, clarinet history, and musicology, with over 100 publications. Key works include The Cambridge Companion to the Clarinet and co-editing The Cambridge History of Musical Performance.
His performance career spans leading period orchestras like The Hanover Band and London Classical Players. Recent projects include recordings of Mozart’s works and exploring 3D-printed instruments. He supervises doctoral students in historical performance philosophy (e.g., Aimée Taylor).
