Colin Gunckel is an Associate Professor at the University of Michigan, affiliated with the Department of American Culture, Latina/o Studies, and the Department of Film, Television, and Media. His research focuses on Latina/o media and art history, Latin American cinema, and transnational film cultures.

Gunckel's work redefines national cinema as transnational and intermedial, particularly examining Mexican film culture in early 20th-century Los Angeles through diverse media like the Spanish-language press, theater publicity, and urban space. His scholarship on Chicano art challenges traditional narratives using archival research.
His recent publications explore topics such as the "Chicano photographic" concept, East L.A. punk's relationship to Chicano cultural production, and Hollywood's Spanish-language film reception. These works emphasize methodologies for analyzing marginalized groups' representations.
