Colin Gordon Calloway

Colin Gordon Calloway is Professor of History and Professor of Native American & Indigenous Studies at Dartmouth College, holding the John Kimball Jr. 1943 Professorship. He earned his B.A. and Ph.D. in History from the University of Leeds, England (1978). Before joining Dartmouth in 1990 as a visiting professor, he taught high school in Vermont, served as associate director and editor at the D'Arcy McNickle Center for the History of the American Indian in Chicago, and taught at the University of Wyoming for seven years. His research focuses on Native American history, Indian-white relations, and colonial America.

His major publications include works on George Washington’s interactions with Native peoples, Native American military resistance, treaty dynamics, and the history of Dartmouth College’s Indigenous connections. Current projects explore the Scots-Irish impact on Indigenous territories. Calloway’s work bridges academic rigor with public engagement, emphasizing Indigenous perspectives in American historiography.

Despite no listed scientific awards, his scholarly contributions have reshaped understandings of Native American agency in early American history.
