Colin Furness is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Information at the University of Toronto, with a teaching stream appointment. He holds a cross-appointment with the Institute for Health Policy, Management, and Evaluation (IHPME). His expertise spans health informatics, public health epidemiology, and the design of information systems for collaborative knowledge work. He earned his PhD in 2010, focusing on organizational information culture and collaborative systems, followed by an MPH in epidemiology in 2014.
Prof. Furness has pioneered work on hospital infection control through real-time tracking systems and has been a prominent public health advocate during the COVID-19 pandemic. He directs the Master of Information Program and has received awards for teaching excellence, including the Outstanding Instructor Award (2015 and 2016). His research integrates quantitative methods in public health, organizational learning, and the evaluation of information systems.
