Colenso Speer is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Maryland. His research examines molecular-genetic programs and activity patterns that drive neural circuit maturation in the mammalian visual system.
The Speer Lab investigates structure/function relationships in visual microcircuits using genetic labeling, electrophysiology, and advanced imaging techniques. Recent work focuses on synaptic clustering mechanisms underlying eye-specific competition and proteomic transitions during circadian pacemaker development.
Key methodologies include volumetric super-resolution imaging (STORM), 3D-STORM tissue imaging, and computational analysis of neural architecture. Research aims to advance understanding of neurodevelopmental disorders and therapeutic approaches.
